A careful study of the politicking in America between 1858 and 1870 revealed a semblance with political situations that abound in Nigeria from 2015 till date. Nigeria President being branded as dictatorial by the opposition over his stance to win a war against highly powered politician’s involved in the web of corruption, knowing that the process of our laws dialectically in making pronouncements are subtle and can’t easily tame past corrupt political office holders and their ilk in sensitive positions at top hierarchy. Those with high sense of history can thinker on the facade of current disparage against Nigerian President, with the first term in office of Abraham Lincoln over his vested interest to protect the interest of the downtrodden at the expense of the corrupt political class during the American Civil War.
America achieved the desired greatness after the abolition of slave trade and prevalence of state’s interest above individual’s interest during the Lincoln Presidency, Lincoln earned countless negative appellations from misinformed citizens, overzealous opinion leaders and mischievous political heavy weights as currently observed in our clime. It has being a tug of war between the present administration and beneficiaries of the era of corruption; sabotaging all efforts to strengthen laws and institutions to combat corruption, impunity and disorderliness. The National Assembly as a sensitive institution has blatantly refused to support the anti-corruption crusade of the present administration. The performance of EFCC should have been excellent for obvious reasons, but many among high
profile cases involves notable members of the National Assembly and their cronies, a situation causing setbacks for advocates of good governance.
America has somewhat become a global yardstick for the measure of good governance index and entrenchment of democratic tenets; most importantly are the collective aspirations of the people to live in a Country where there inalienable rights are guaranteed by the government. One of the greatest President America ever produced was Abraham Lincoln, who is regarded by notable scholars as the father of modern America because of his pro people orientation. Nigerians deserve similar trend of administration when you appraise the comparison people make in terms of gross domestic product, industrialization, purchasing power, security and technological advancement.
It’s equally not surprising when people posit that an independent rule of over fifty years ought to have produced to a near perfect system where the economic strength of Nigeria will be compared to none, considering the natural endowments and manpower. Little did we consider that we have refused to create a solid basement for National Interest, which is a great disservice to ourselves?
The independence and birth of United State of America as an independent nation dated back July 2, 1776 and Abraham Lincoln was the 16th President of America from March 4, 1861 to April 15, 1865. Very dramatic and glorious years for America.
America had existed for over 80 years before Lincoln became the President as the first member of the Republican Party elected to the presidency and the civil war began in same 1861 between Northern and Southern States over issues bothering on slavery, states’ rights and west ward expansion. Notable States seceded to form Confederate States of America; it was regarded as the deadliest war ever fought on American soil with record of over six hundred thousand soldiers death recorded. Before the Union’s victory over the Confederate in 1865, Abraham Lincoln believed in compensation as a form of emancipation which informed his steadfastness, which ensured abolition of slavery and full restoration of states’ rights as gateway for the glory of America as a Nation till date.
President Lincoln made series o f E m a n c i p a t i o n Proclamations before victory was eventually achieved but several inabilities happened to the Republican Party due to “the ill success of the war” and issuance of Executive Orders regarded as dictatorial by the Democrat as the opposition party. The major challenge of the Lincoln P r e s i d e n c y w a s t h e restoration of normalcy to the American System and the war must be won, his approach included the suspension of the privilege of the habeas corpus throughout the Country and authorize the arrest of any person “guilty of disloyal practice, affording aid and comfort to Rebels against the authority of the United States”.
In pursuance of the anti-corruption crusade by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission and trials of politically influential citizens, with the efforts of security agencies to sanitize the system by ensuring thorough prosecutions of alleged criminals, President Muhammadu Buhari has been battling to ensure compensated emancipation of the people against economic servitude, insecurity and social malaise. The fact that President Lincoln survived the onslaught and won a second term in office is a respite that President Muhammadu Buhari shall equally survive the onslaught and lead Nigerians to economic boom and social development. ‘The imaginary light may be moving slowly but surely I will take you to the next level’…
Lincoln’s approach led to electoral loss of notable Republican States in the 1862 fall elections for governors and congressmen and the President was blamed for the disgraceful outcome of the elections. The Republican lost the election simply because some influential political gladiators worked against the interest of the State in connivance with security heads to regard Lincoln as a failure, due to executive fiats opposed to their views. Lincoln’s command to Military Heads was disobeyed occasionally to a level where Lincoln once contemplated to lead the war himself.
For the past three years of the Buhari Presidency, there has been a group of influential Nigerians with clandestine motives fumed with hatred for Mr. President and their rigid passion for looting public treasury; among them is a personality just like John Wilkes Booth in the era of President Lincoln.
As bold, crafty and brutish like Booth with influence in the Confederate Secret Service and ill-gotten wealth. Booth called Lincoln a “false President” over his attempt to salvage the interest of the downtrodden. This brutish personality is in the exact image of John Wilkes Booth (for your study). Booth and others mobilized the opposition against Lincoln in similar manner with antics of the bedeviled opposition party with failed targets to brand President Muhammadu Buhari as a false President.
These brings to bear the travails about the genuiness of Mr President’s strive for a better life for the people, unfortunately, due to the long years of economic inabilities, the downtrodden who has almost lost hope in obligation of a just metamorphosed society; are carried away by the antics of self-serving leaders that constitutes themselves as albatross to the fight against corruption and serves as the greatest blockade to the emancipation of the people.
The conscious members of the populace are mostly political slaves to their masters who determines their social political and economic lives especially as witnessed with usual junketing from one political party to the other by supposed political leaders with so much political entireties serving as political party leaders, members of parliament, governors and political appointees with no self- thinking reasoning other than the dictates of their pay masters. Without an end to this futile mentality, it may be very difficult for total political freedom where party ideologies and individual capacities will determine the future of our country, though not legal as it was in America but more insulting to our political space that people fail to understand why their wishes and aspirations are suffering setbacks and are insurmountable under democracy.
When the best of brains are afraid of hunger and political alienations for opposing clandestine motives of political demagogues with ulterior motives to bring an end to a presidency with good motives that heals the Country of economic retrogression.

That many young people are unfamiliar with bitter herbs makes it difficult to be promoted in the modern world, its bitterness is discouraging but the benefits are greater than sweeter pills in health formations. Manufacturers and farmers invest high energy, techniques and time to make a product, but the end users only consider the usage especially when affordable, not minding that it underwent a process before the consumption stage. One had not thought of the exigency to canvass Nigerians who felt as though to be on the threshold to new lives after the last general elections, to consider that making everlasting positive changes in Nigeria is highly tasking, considering the long era of rot and systemic failure inherited by the present administration, but the understanding and difficulties encountered by this administration to make positive changes imperatively commands canvassing the populace to repose their confidence in President Muhammadu Buhari to take Nigeria to greater heights soonest.
It is a known fact that productions are subjective to raw materials, shortage or inadequacies usually lead to depression for manufacturers. In the same manner, natural tendencies like rain, heat, humidity and soil fertility affects farm produce and this could lead to anxiety and austerity as the case may be. Even reproduction takes certain duration before delivery and it requires patience to watch a child grow into maturity. Comparing these to governance in Nigeria, the mindset of instant effectiveness of the change mantra in the polity to translate to immediate economic boom has portrayed Mr. President as not doing enough but the reconstruction of roads across the federation is a sure panacea to growth and development.
In the essay of James Fallow of the Atlantic Magazine in his master piece titled – How the World Works, he appraised “Automatic growth versus deliberate development” from the Anglo-American approach that emphasizes the unpredictability of economics considering changes in technologies, tastes, political and human circumstances. He expressed, life is so fluid, and hence attempts at central planning are virtually doomed to fail. The best way to “plan,” therefore is to leave the adaptation to the people who have their own money at stake, that if each individual does what is best for him or her, the result will be what is best for the nation as a whole. He further stated that; just as seeds blown by chance by the wind may sometimes grow into big trees, the growth of industries is a process that may take hundreds of years to complete and one should not ascribe to sheer chance what a nation has achieved through its laws and institutions.
Aligning with that prognosis, the unpleasant circumstances that abound in our polity in Nigeria today is a reflection of what our Country has achieved through our laws and institutions over the years, namely: corruption, impunity and disorderliness, which are the challenges on the neck of government.
In the build up to the 2015 Presidential Election, Mr. President was perceived as a dictator unfit to lead a democratic Country, this blackmail he successfully defeated with his strong inclinations to the rule of law, a situation that propelled his detractors to misinterpret the change mantra message at the expense of societal progress.
The burden of genuine leadership in Nigeria goes beyond the affinity of individuals from historical perspective, we are known for doing things that jeopadise the authentic work book document of the dreams of our founding fathers, and also negates the responsibility of true leadership as expected by the people.
Despite the offer of bailout for the purpose of settling salary payments and arrears, many among the State Governors diverted the funds to personal usage, thereby increasing the rate of poverty in their States which makes it look as if it was the PMB led administration that is the source of the problem.
Many State Governors today inherited strong liabilities from their successors who are leading members of the 8th Senate, Nigerians have not deem it necessary to vent their angers against those leading figures who have made life unbearable for them over the years, but could easily rub all the blames on President Muhammadu Buhari who has selflessly ensured that the dignity of labour is sacrosanct despite frustrations by those whom we expect to have either repented or bury their heads in shame for putting the country in these fury of anger and devastating state of economy. Economic recession occurred in Nigeria due to poor management of the economy over the years when looting, stealing and contract inflation was the order of the day.
Therefore, it is the failure of Government over the years to manage resources accrued to them in the best interest of their people. It is a known fact that the revenue allocations to States were utterly and selfishly mismanaged in previous era to a tune where salaries of the working civil service were not paid, contractors were also owed and brought about an ineffective society. It was really a messy situation before the emergence of this present administration.
PMB came with the honest intentions of getting us out of this mess which can be eased by improving our gross domestic products, proper diversification of the economy and solving inflation problems. This is a national emergency that can only occur if the masses are ready to sacrifice their unholy alliance with corrupt politicians and business moguls who are their benefactors, until this is achieved, every successive government will continue to be ineffectual in handling economic matters.
